When to remove windshield tapes after replacement
Here at GoFast we want to help you understand more about the tapes attached to the windshield seem unsightly, and so most vehicle owners who just had their windshield replaced wonder how long to leave the tape on after the replacement procedure. But before knowing when the tapes can be safely removed, it is best to know the purpose of putting these on newly replaced auto glass.
Windshield technicians use retention tapes to help the newly replaced glass to adhere to the windshield frames. In essence, it helps the new windshield stick to the moldings and protects the seal during the whole drying process. Since the adhesive will not completely dry until several hours, the specialized auto glass tape is meant to help ensure that the windshield sticks into the frame as the owner drives off his car an hour or two after the replacement.
Auto Glass tape and driving safety
Autoglass experts say that windshield tapes must remain fastened in the newly replaced auto glass for at least 24 hours. If it is up to the technicians, they would recommend leaving the tapes for a couple of days if possible.
Removing the retention tapes within a couple of hours from getting the windshield replaced might affect the full adherence of the auto glass from the frame and moldings. Moreover, it will help the windshield to adhere to the frame in case it rains or snows while it is yet to completely adhere. Yes, the retention tapes are not nice to look at, but at least the vehicle owner is assured that the replacement process is completed correctly, and safely. Following the technician’s after-care instructions will not hurt.

Before heading out from the windshield shop make sure that the procedure was concluded an hour or two before driving out even for a short distance to help the glass adhere to the moldings and the frame. Likewise, make sure to check for possible broken glass inside the car.
For the next couple of days up to a week following windshield replacement, the vehicle owner is advised to refrain from putting anything outside and inside the area of the newly replaced auto glass to keep it from bumping into the windshield. Doing so applies pressure to the auto glass and could cause it to get displaced from the frame.
At the same time, vehicle owners should avoid getting automatic car washes as well as pressurized car washing services. Going through these early on could cause the new auto glass to shift its position within the frame or affect its overall adherence to the glass moldings.
During this period, vehicle owners are also advised to be extra gentle with their cars. For instance, it is best to gently close car doors and trunks to minimize unnecessary vibrations from moving the windshield. Also, avoid driving on dirt roads, through potholes, and on unevenly paved roadways.Â
